Our plain sheet of steel plate is one of the most popular products that we offer. It is a quality strong metal for myriad DIY and industrial applications. The uses for mild steel plate metal include automotive bodywork, boxes and security doors.
Speciality Metals offers a top of the line sheet of steel that is perfect for a variety of applications. Each panel measures at 2 x 1 metres and has a thickness of 0.5mm, it’s versatile and easy to work with. From welding to machining, this sheet of steel is highly durable and features excellent formability and bendability. Not only is it a reliable choice for any project, it is also sourced from the UK, so you can trust in the quality and fast delivery of each sheet of steel supplied by Speciality Metals.
This specific option is a thin sheet metal. It is popular with our customers because it is so strong and can be used for many DIY applications. We can cut this to specific sizes for you if required as it is very difficult to cut.

Sheet metal is also available in aluminium and stainless steel.
The cheapest way to cut 0.5mm mild steel sheet is likely to be using a pair of tin snips. Tin snips are handheld cutting tools that are designed to easily cut through thin sheets of metal, including mild steel. The blades are shaped to allow you to easily make straight cuts, curves, or intricate shapes. They are also relatively inexpensive compared to other metal cutting tools. Another option is using a hacksaw with a fine-toothed blade, which can also be effective for cutting mild steel sheet.
0.5mm sheet metal plates can be used for a variety of applications, including:
The strength of 0.5mm mild steel sheet depends on various factors, including the type of steel, the manufacturing process, and the treatment applied. Mild steel is a low carbon steel with a carbon content of less than 0.25%. In general, mild steel is not considered a high strength material.
However, the ultimate tensile strength of 0.5mm mild steel sheet can vary depending on the specific grade of steel and the manufacturing process used. For example, some grades of mild steel have a tensile strength of around 400-500 N/mm^2, while others may have a tensile strength of up to 600 N/mm^2.
It’s important to note that the strength of a sheet metal material is also influenced by other factors, such as the thickness of the material, the type of loading it will be subjected to, and the presence of any surface treatments or coatings. To determine the strength of a specific 0.5mm mild steel sheet, it’s best to consult the manufacturer’s specifications or consult a materials engineer.

Mild steel is a fairly ductile material as it contains a smaller amount of the hardening alloy (carbon) than similar carbon steels. It’s tensile strength is therefore low (400MPa) due to this lower carbon content. If you do require a higher tensile strength then we suggest that you search for high carbon steel.
When we speak about tensile strength we are referring to what is simply the maximum amount of stress a specific material can withstand without breaking when being stretched and pulled. This is measured using a tensile strength test, which involves taking a sample of the material and placing it in a tensometer. The analyst then test the type of steel by increasing the force on the material until it fractures and fragments. Some metals break without any deforming occurring, whereas other more ductile materials will stretch a small amount.
Tensile strength is then measured as a force per unit area. The unit of measure being a pascal (Pa)/megapascal(MPa), a newton per square metre (N/m2) or pounds-force per square inch (psi).
