45 x 2mm round tube steel is used in many structural and engineering applications. The size refers to the outside diameter and then the thickness of the wall.
ERW means Electric Resistance Welded. ERW round tube is made when steel strip is welded to form a tube shape. The tube is continuously seam welded which means that there is a neat weld running along the inside of the tube.
Mild steel round tube is widely used in a variety of applications and also comes in both square and rectangular options.

Key information:
We also carry a wide range of mild steel sheet metal, angle iron and flat bar.
Mild steel is a quality strong metal. However it is not rust proof and may do so over time. Please use galvanised or stainless steel if you need resistance to rust. If this metal tube does show signs of rust then simply remove this with WD40 or fine sanding.
The grade of plain steel that we have available has mechanical properties that provide excellent machinability, formability and weldability.
Mild steel can be welded and it’s also suitable for painting. Mild steel is a magnetic grade of metal. Magnets will stick to this sheet but it is not itself a magnet.
Hot-rolled and cold-rolled are two primary methods for producing tube steel, each with distinct characteristics. Hot-rolled steel is processed at temperatures typically above the steel’s recrystallisation point, allowing it to be shaped more easily. Once shaped, it cools naturally, leading to a rougher, scaly surface finish. This method may not always provide precise dimensions due to the high-temperature processing and natural cooling. As a result, hot-rolled steel is often less expensive and is commonly used in applications where exact shapes and tolerances aren’t vital, such as in construction.
On the other hand, cold-rolled steel is further processed at or near room temperature after the initial hot rolling and cooling. This additional processing gives it a smoother, more polished finish and better dimensional accuracy. Cold rolling can also increase the steel’s strength and hardness due to work hardening. While typically more expensive than hot-rolled steel, cold-rolled steel is preferred for applications demanding a better surface finish, tighter tolerances or specific mechanical properties, like automotive parts or certain machinery components.
Cleaning mild tube steel is crucial to maintain its appearance and prolong its lifespan. Start by removing loose dirt and debris using a soft cloth or brush. For more stubborn grime, a mixture of mild detergent and water can be applied using a soft sponge or cloth. Ensure to rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove any soap residue. If the steel shows signs of rust or oxidation, lightly scrubbing with a wire brush or fine-grade sandpaper can help. Always move in the direction of the grain to avoid scratching the surface. After cleaning, it’s advisable to dry the tube thoroughly to prevent moisture build-up, which can lead to rusting. If the environment is particularly corrosive, consider applying a protective coating or rust inhibitor after cleaning.
Mild tube steel can be used in marine environments, but it comes with challenges due to the highly corrosive nature of saltwater and salty air. The saline conditions can accelerate the rusting process of mild steel. If mild tube steel is to be used in such conditions, it’s crucial to implement protective measures. Applying high-quality marine-grade paint, galvanising or using protective coatings can offer some resistance against corrosion. Additionally, regular maintenance and inspection become imperative to ensure any onset of rust is dealt with promptly. For prolonged durability in marine settings, materials like stainless steel, especially the 316 grade, or aluminum might be more suitable due to their higher resistance to corrosion. If using mild steel is essential for specific reasons, be prepared for increased maintenance and protective measures to prolong its lifespan in marine conditions.
