Aluminium 6082 is a medium strength alloy with excellent corrosion resistance. It has the highest strength of the 6000 series alloys, which are known for their versatility. 6082 grade Aluminium is primarily known for its exceptional mechanical properties and is typically used in highly stressed applications.
Aluminium tubes made from 6082 grade aluminium are lightweight, durable and highly resistant to corrosion. This makes them suitable for many applications across a variety of industries.
These applications include structural engineering, particularly for bridge building, scaffolding and frameworks, thanks to the strength of the 6082 alloy. It’s also used in transportation and marine applications due to its resistance to seawater corrosion. Furthermore, 6082 is often used for the construction of beer barrels and milk churns, among other applications.
Another characteristic of 6082 aluminium is that it is good for welding and can be easily machined but is not well-suited to brazing and soldering. It also has good cold formability in the T4 temper, making it suitable for complex sections. The tempering process improves the mechanical properties of the aluminium, with T6 being the strongest temper available for 6082 grade.
The two grades of aluminium round tubing we stock are 6063T6 and 6082T6. Although the grade of a tube is not important for many applications, it is critical for others. A tube manufactured in Grade 6063T6 is suitable for bending, forming and swaging. It is particularly advantageous to drill, thread and machine aluminium tubes supplied in Grade 6082T6 because they are harder. Welding is possible with both grades of aluminium round tubes.
Normally, our Aluminium round tubes are supplied in a high-quality mill finish, but we are also able to add strength by powder coating, polishing or anodising. In addition to being highly corrosion-resistant, the 6000 series aluminium used in our round tube products also contains magnesium and silicon.
Yes, aluminium tubes can be used with tube clamps. Tube clamps are a common method for creating connections between tubes without the need for welding or threading. They are often used in structures like handrails, safety barriers and frame systems.
When using tube clamps with aluminium tubes, there are a few things to consider:
Size: Make sure the tube clamp is the correct size for the aluminium tube. Clamps and tubes are usually classified by their diameter, so ensure that these match.
Material compatibility: Ensure that the material of the clamp is compatible with aluminium. If it’s not, this could lead to galvanic corrosion where the two materials contact. This is particularly important in outdoor or corrosive environments. Plastic or aluminium clamps can be a good choice to pair with aluminium tubes.
Strength: Consider the strength and load requirements of your design. Aluminium is a relatively soft metal, so over-tightening the clamp can potentially deform the tube.
Surface protection: Aluminium is resistant to corrosion due to the protective oxide layer it forms naturally, but harsh conditions or damages to this layer can still cause corrosion. Be mindful of this if the tube is to be used outdoors or in a corrosive environment.
As long as these considerations are taken into account, aluminium tubes can effectively be used with tube clamps for a variety of structural applications.
