With its versatility and strength, the mild steel square tube is the perfect option for a wide range of applications ranging from construction to furniture, providing both stability and aesthetic appeal.
Mild steel square tube box section is a quality strong metal product. However it is not rust proof and may do so over time. Please use galvanised or stainless steel if you need resistance to rust. If this metal tube does show signs off rust then simply get this off with WD40 or fine sanding.
The grade of plain steel that we have available has mechanical properties that provide excellent machinability, formability and weldability. Mild steel can be welded and it is also suitable for painting. Mild steel is a magnetic grade of metal. Magnets will stick to this sheet but it is not itself a magnet.

Mild steel square tubes, when exposed to acidic or alkaline environments, can face corrosion challenges. The pH of the environment, which measures its acidity or alkalinity, significantly impacts the rate of corrosion. In acidic conditions, with a pH below 7, mild steel tends to corrode rapidly as the acid reacts with the iron, producing iron salts and hydrogen gas. Alkaline environments, with a pH above 7, can also be corrosive, especially if the alkalinity is due to salts that can break down and form corrosive substances. This corrosion in both settings can compromise the structural integrity of the tube over time. Protective measures, like coatings or paints, are vital. Coatings such as epoxy, zinc or even specialised acid or alkali-resistant paints, can provide a barrier, preventing the corrosive agents from coming into direct contact with the steel. If mild steel square tubes are to be used in such challenging environments, it’s crucial to regularly inspect them for signs of corrosion and maintain their protective coatings effectively.
Mild steel square tube, while capable of serving as an electrical conduit, presents certain challenges that need addressing. Mild steel’s inherent susceptibility to corrosion, especially in humid environments, makes it necessary to employ protective coatings like galvanisation to ensure its longevity and maintain electrical integrity. Moreover, being a conductor, it can act as a grounding conduit but is also susceptible to magnetic fields, which could lead to interference in some setups. Additionally, its weight and rigidity, being greater than alternatives like PVC or aluminum, might pose installation challenges. It’s also pivotal to recognise that local building and electrical codes might have specific conduit requirements regarding grounding and fire resistance, which could affect the suitability of mild steel. In essence, while feasible, using mild steel square tube as an electrical conduit demands careful consideration of its attributes and potential protective measures, balanced against local regulations and the advantages of other conventional materials.
Mild steel square tube, when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, doesn’t experience direct deterioration from the UV rays themselves, as UV radiation primarily affects organic materials like plastics. However, the secondary effects of prolonged UV exposure can be problematic. UV rays can break down paints, coatings and other protective layers applied to the steel surface, making it more susceptible to environmental elements. Once these protective layers are compromised, the mild steel becomes vulnerable to moisture, oxygen and other corrosive agents, accelerating the rusting process. In areas with strong sunlight, the heat accompanying UV exposure can exacerbate the rate of thermal expansion and contraction of the steel, which may impact the structural integrity over time, especially if the steel is under continuous load. To safeguard mild steel square tubes from the detrimental effects of UV exposure, it’s advisable to use UV-resistant coatings and paints and to perform regular maintenance checks to ensure that the protective layers remain intact and effective.
