Mild steel square tube box section is a quality strong metal product. However it is not rust proof and may do so over time. Please use galvanised or stainless steel if you need resistance to rust. If this metal tube does show signs off rust then simply get this off with WD40 or fine sanding.
The grade of plain steel that we have available has mechanical properties that provide excellent machinability, formability and weldability. Mild steel can be welded and it is also suitable for painting. Mild steel is a magnetic grade of metal. Magnets will stick to this sheet but it is not itself a magnet.

Mild steel, commonly known as low-carbon steel, has limited resistance to many chemicals. While it’s more resistant to bases, it’s particularly vulnerable to acids like hydrochloric and sulfuric. Saline environments, strong oxidising agents and even plain water, especially when stagnant or impure, can accelerate corrosion or rusting. Some organic solvents might not affect mild steel, but the steel’s resistance can decrease if contaminants are present in the solvents. To enhance its chemical resistance, protective coatings like paint, epoxy or galvanisation are often applied. Furthermore, controlling the environment to reduce exposure to moisture and oxygen, or employing cathodic protection—where a sacrificial metal corrodes in place of the steel—can also mitigate corrosion. If contemplating using mild steel square tubing in a chemically active environment, understanding the exact chemical nature and taking preventive measures is paramount.
Mild steel square tubing, though versatile and cost-effective, is not inherently well-suited for marine or coastal environments. These settings are characterised by high salinity and humidity, both of which accelerate the corrosion process in mild steel. The continuous exposure to salt spray and moist air in such environments leads to rapid rust formation on the steel’s surface. While it’s possible to use mild steel in these conditions, it requires significant protective measures. Commonly, a thick galvanised coating, specialised marine-grade paints, or epoxy coatings are applied to offer a protective barrier against the aggressive conditions. Regular maintenance and inspections are also essential to ensure the steel’s integrity. For critical applications or where long-term durability is a priority in marine or coastal areas, alternatives like stainless steel or aluminum, which have innate resistance to corrosion, are often more suitable choices.
Yes, mild steel square tubing is a conductor of electricity, but its conductivity is relatively low when compared to metals like copper or silver. Mild steel, which is essentially low-carbon steel, has higher electrical resistivity, making it less efficient at conducting electricity than purer metals. While it can serve in applications where electrical conduction is necessary, such as in grounding systems, it isn’t the optimal choice for applications demanding high electrical conductivity. The electrical properties of mild steel can also be influenced by factors like temperature, alloying elements and surface treatments. If high electrical conductivity is crucial for a specific application, materials like copper are more suitable.
