Mild steel square tube box section is a quality strong metal product. However it is not rust proof and may do so over time. Please use galvanised or stainless steel if you need resistance to rust. If this metal tube does show signs off rust then simply get this off with WD40 or fine sanding.
The grade of plain steel that we have available has mechanical properties that provide excellent machinability, formability and weldability. Mild steel can be welded and it is also suitable for painting. Mild steel is a magnetic grade of metal. Magnets will stick to this sheet but it is not itself a magnet.

Mild steel box sections have a clean, geometric profile that aligns well with contemporary architectural and design trends. Their straight lines and uniform dimensions convey a minimalist and modern aesthetic, making them suitable for both interior and exterior design elements. Whether incorporated into façades, railings, furniture, light fixtures or art installations, their neat appearance is often sought after.
Additionally, the surface of mild steel is amenable to various finishes. It can be painted, powder-coated or even galvanised, allowing designers to achieve a desired look or match specific color palettes. The ability to customise the finish ensures that the steel box sections can fit seamlessly into a broad range of design contexts.
Moreover, the hollow nature of these sections adds an intriguing element to designs, providing depth and contrast, especially when used alongside other materials like wood or glass.
Paint: Painting is one of the most straightforward methods to improve the appearance of steel. With a wide range of colors and finishes available, paint can give steel a fresh, clean look and provide a layer of protection against corrosion. Proper surface preparation, such as removing rust and applying a primer, is crucial for paint adhesion.
Powder Coating: Powder coating is a dry finishing process that provides a durable and decorative finish. The powder, comprising pigment and resin particles, is electrostatically sprayed onto the surface and then cured under heat to form a hard protective layer. It offers a uniform finish without drips or runs and is available in numerous colors and textures.
Galvanisation: While primarily a protective method, galvanisation – the process of coating steel with a layer of zinc – can also enhance the steel’s appearance by giving it a shiny, metallic finish. Over time, the zinc can develop a patina, which some designers find appealing for rustic or industrial aesthetics.
Chrome or Nickel Plating: This process involves electroplating a thin layer of chrome or nickel onto the steel. While it provides a mirror-like, decorative finish, it also adds a layer of protection against corrosion.
Oxidation (Intentional Rusting): For a rustic or industrial look, mild steel can be intentionally oxidised to create a controlled rusted appearance. While this method isn’t about preserving the original look of the steel, it’s a sought-after aesthetic in specific design contexts.
Anodising (for Aluminum): While not applicable to mild steel, it’s worth noting that metals like aluminum can be anodised to provide a durable, decorative finish that can be dyed in various colors.
When considering any coating or treatment for aesthetic purposes, it’s essential to think about the environment the steel will be in, as this may influence the best protection method. Properly applied coatings can significantly extend the lifespan of mild steel box sections, especially in corrosive or high-wear environments.
Mild steel box sections, while versatile and robust, are inherently susceptible to corrosion when exposed to high moisture environments. The presence of both oxygen and moisture can accelerate the rusting process on the steel’s surface. However, with proper treatments and precautions, mild steel box sections can be used effectively even in damp conditions.
To utilise mild steel in high moisture environments, it’s essential to apply protective coatings. Galvanisation, which involves coating the steel with a protective layer of zinc, is a popular method to resist corrosion. The zinc layer sacrifices itself to corrosion, thereby protecting the underlying steel. Another approach is to use paint or powder coatings that create a barrier, preventing moisture and oxygen from reaching the steel surface. Additionally, regular maintenance, like periodic inspections for signs of rust and immediate remediation, can help prolong the lifespan of mild steel in wet conditions.
