Mild steel square tube box section is a quality strong metal product. However it is not rust proof and may do so over time. Please use galvanised or stainless steel if you need resistance to rust. If this metal tube does show signs off rust then simply get this off with WD40 or fine sanding.
The grade of plain steel that we have available has mechanical properties that provide excellent machinability, formability and weldability. Mild steel can be welded and it is also suitable for painting. Mild steel is a magnetic grade of metal. Magnets will stick to this sheet but it is not itself a magnet.

Steel square tubes, when tailored for precision, are a viable choice for hydraulic and pneumatic systems due to their robust strength and rigidity, which make them apt for high-pressure environments. Their precision ensures a consistent inner diameter, essential for maintaining smooth flow and minimising turbulence. When integrated with suitable fittings, they offer a reliable, leak-proof solution. However, while their resilience is a strong suit, it’s essential to be mindful of potential corrosion, especially if the system’s fluid or external environment poses corrosive challenges. Protective coatings or even opting for stainless steel variants can address this. Also, steel’s inherent weight and rigidity might be limiting in scenarios demanding lighter or more flexible materials. The interior finish of the tube is equally crucial; a smooth inner surface is pivotal to uphold fluid dynamics and mitigate erosion. In essence, while steel square tubes present potential for hydraulic and pneumatic applications, it’s imperative to make choices in grade, design and finish that harmonise with the system’s specific demands to ensure optimal operation and durability.
The longevity of steel square tube structures is nuanced, often spanning several decades, yet is heavily contingent upon various determinants. Environmental factors, like the corrosive saltiness of coastal areas or industrial pollutants, can expedite degradation. Humidity, too, can hasten rust formation. However, the lifespan can be considerably extended through measures like galvanisation or the application of protective paints and coatings; for instance, hot-dip galvanised steel can remain robust for over 50 years in many settings. The design’s quality also plays a pivotal role: structures designed to prevent moisture accumulation naturally endure longer. Similarly, the inherent quality of the steel—its alloy constituents and purity—affect longevity. Regular maintenance, encompassing routine inspections and protective re-coatings, can also protract a structure’s life. Moreover, structures under recurrent heavy loads or fluctuating stresses may wear out sooner. Given these variables, while pinpointing an exact lifespan is challenging, a meticulously maintained steel square tube structure in a favorable environment can feasibly last between 50-70 years, if not longer. It’s vital to consider local conditions and operational demands when estimating longevity.
Absolutely, steel square tube is recyclable, and in fact, steel is one of the most recycled materials in the world. Its inherent properties allow it to be recycled multiple times without significant degradation in quality. The recycling process involves melting down the old steel and reforming it into new products. This cycle of recycling conserves resources and energy, as producing new steel from recycled material requires significantly less energy than extracting and processing iron ore. Moreover, recycling steel reduces greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a reduction in environmental impact. Many steel square tube structures, after reaching the end of their operational life, are collected, processed and reintroduced into the production cycle. This sustainability aspect is a strong advantage of using steel, making it a preferred choice in industries aiming for eco-friendliness and resource conservation. So, when considering the environmental footprint of a project, the recyclability of steel square tube adds a green dimension to its list of attributes.
