40 x 1.5mm mild steel round hollow metal tube is used in many structural and engineering applications. The size refers to the outside diameter and then the thickness of the wall.
ERW means Electric Resistance Welded. ERW round tube is made when steel strip is welded to form a tube shape. The tube is continuously seam welded which means that there is a neat weld running along the inside of the tube.
Mild steel round tube is widely used in a variety of applications and also comes in both square and rectangular options.
Speciality Metals offers a wide range of durable and versatile hollow metal tubes, including their ERW round tubing made from 40mm diameter x 1.5mm wall mild steel. These tubes come in various lengths and are exceptionally cost-effective, making them an economical solution for a multitude of applications. In addition, the tubes are also environmentally friendly as they are recyclable. One of the most outstanding features of these tubes is their excellent welding, forming, bending and machining abilities, making them simple to work with and perfect for a wide range of projects. Choose Speciality Metals’ hollow metal tubes for a dependable and durable solution that is sure to meet your needs.

Key information:
We also carry a wide range of mild steel sheet metal, angle iron and flat bar.
Mild steel is a quality strong metal. However it is not rust proof and may do so over time. Please use galvanised or stainless steel if you need resistance to rust. If this metal tube does show signs of rust then simply remove this with WD40 or fine sanding.
The grade of plain steel that we have available has mechanical properties that provide excellent machinability, formability and weldability.
Mild steel can be welded and it’s also suitable for painting. Mild steel is a magnetic grade of metal. Magnets will stick to this sheet but it is not itself a magnet.
Mild steel hollow metal tubes, inherently, do not possess specific resistance to UV radiation. UV radiation primarily affects organic materials, causing them to degrade over time. In contrast, steel’s primary environmental concerns arise from moisture and chemicals, which can lead to rust and corrosion. However, many steel tubes are coated or painted to protect them from corrosion and enhance their aesthetic appeal. It’s these coatings or paints that can degrade under prolonged exposure to UV radiation, leading to chipping, fading or peeling. Once the protective layer is compromised, the underlying steel becomes vulnerable to the elements, especially moisture, which can initiate rusting. Therefore, when using painted or coated mild steel tubes in outdoor applications with significant UV exposure, it’s essential to use UV-resistant finishes or regularly maintain and reapply protective coatings to ensure the longevity of both the tube’s appearance and structural integrity.
Mild steel hollow metal tube is indeed a conductor of electricity, as steel is primarily composed of iron, which is a metallic element with good electrical conductivity. However, when compared to materials like copper or silver, which are often used in electrical applications, steel’s conductivity is relatively low.
The conductivity of a material can be affected by various factors, including its composition, temperature and impurities present. Mild steel, being an alloy of iron with small amounts of carbon and possibly other elements, will have its conductivity affected by its exact composition.
For most electrical applications where high conductivity is essential, such as in wire or electrical connections, steel isn’t the first choice due to its lower conductivity. Instead, it might be used in structural or shielding components where its strength and other mechanical properties are more important than its conductive capabilities.
Mild steel hollow metal tubes have been extensively used in the automotive industry for exhaust systems due to their affordability, ease of fabrication and adequate durability. The malleability of mild steel allows for easy shaping and bending to fit the contours and requirements of various vehicle designs. However, one of the primary concerns with mild steel in exhaust applications is its susceptibility to rust and corrosion, especially given the high moisture and heat environment of exhaust systems. Over time, the moisture from combustion, coupled with external environmental factors, can lead to the degradation of mild steel exhaust components. As a response to these challenges, many modern vehicles have shifted to using stainless steel for exhaust systems, which offers enhanced corrosion resistance and longevity. Nonetheless, mild steel may still be found in budget-friendly automotive applications or in situations where long-term durability is not a primary concern. Regular inspections and maintenance can extend the life of mild steel exhaust components, but users should be aware of its inherent limitations compared to more corrosion-resistant materials.
