Available in various lengths, this cost-effective option is not only great for your wallet but for the environment as well – it’s 100% recyclable! And don’t let its budget-friendly price tag fool you; this steel tube boasts excellent welding, forming, bending and machining abilities. So whether you’re creating a sturdy new shelving unit or crafting a custom frame for an art piece, this ERW round tube has got you covered.
38.1 x 2.5mm mild metal tube steel is used in many structural and engineering applications. The size refers to the outside diameter and then the thickness of the wall.
ERW means Electric Resistance Welded. ERW round tube is made when steel strip is welded to form a tube shape. The tube is continuously seam welded which means that there is a neat weld running along the inside of the tube.
Mild steel round tube is widely used in a variety of applications and also comes in both square and rectangular options.
Speciality Metals is proud to provide top-quality metal tube steel products to our customers. Our 38.1mm diameter x 2.5mm wall ERW round tube is the perfect choice for those in need of a durable and versatile solution. Available in various lengths, this product offers excellent welding, forming, bending and machining abilities, making it ideal for a wide range of applications. But that’s not all – our metal tube steel is also cost effective and recyclable, making it a great choice for those who need high-quality materials while also keeping sustainability in mind. Key information:
We also carry a wide range of mild steel sheet metal, angle iron and flat bar.
Mild steel is a quality strong metal. However it is not rust proof and may do so over time. Please use galvanised or stainless steel if you need resistance to rust. If this metal tube does show signs of rust then simply remove this with WD40 or fine sanding.
The grade of plain steel that we have available has mechanical properties that provide excellent machinability, formability and weldability.
Mild steel can be welded and it’s also suitable for painting. Mild steel is a magnetic grade of metal. Magnets will stick to this sheet but it is not itself a magnet.
Anodising is a process primarily associated with aluminum. It involves electrochemically converting the metal surface into a decorative, corrosion-resistant, anodic oxide finish. The question of whether steel, particularly metal tubes made of steel, can be anodised like aluminum is interesting.
Technically, steel cannot be anodised in the same manner as aluminum due to the distinct differences in the two metals’ reactivity and the types of oxide layers they form. When exposed to oxygen, aluminum forms a naturally protective oxide layer that’s ideal for the anodising process. This oxide layer can be thickened through the anodising process, allowing for the infusion of dyes, improved corrosion resistance and a harder surface.
Steel, on the other hand, reacts with oxygen to form iron oxide, commonly known as rust. This rust layer doesn’t provide the same protective or decorative benefits as the oxide layer on aluminum. Instead of enhancing the steel’s properties, rust compromises the metal’s structural integrity and aesthetics.
However, there are alternative processes for steel that can offer enhanced protection and aesthetics. One example is “bluing,” a process often used on firearms to provide a certain level of corrosion resistance and a black-blue appearance to the steel. There’s also the process of galvanising, which coats the steel with a layer of zinc to prevent rusting. Additionally, steel can be coated with various paints, powder coats or other treatments to achieve a desired look or level of protection.
Steel tubing is a common choice for hydraulic systems due to its strength, durability and resistance to high pressures. For hydraulic applications, it’s crucial that the tubing can withstand the internal pressures generated without deforming, bursting or leaking. Steel, especially when it’s been precision-engineered for such purposes, has the tensile strength and robustness needed for these demanding conditions. Furthermore, steel tubes offer tight dimensional tolerances, ensuring a secure fit with other hydraulic components. When considering steel tubing for hydraulic systems, it’s essential to choose the right grade and type, often seamless, to ensure the tubing can handle the designated pressure ratings. Regular inspections and maintenance are also crucial, as any corrosion or damage to the tubing in hydraulic systems can lead to failures or leaks, compromising the system’s safety and efficiency.
When exposed to weather elements, metal tube steel displays varying degrees of resistance. The primary concern is its reaction to moisture and oxygen, which can lead to rusting or corrosion. Over time, if left untreated, this corrosion can compromise the structural integrity of the steel. However, many steel tubes are treated or coated to enhance their resistance to weather. Galvanised steel, for instance, is coated with a layer of zinc, which acts as a barrier against rust formation. Additionally, weathering steel (often known by its brand name, COR-TEN) forms a protective rust patina that shields the inner metal from further corrosion. Apart from moisture, steel can also be affected by extreme temperature fluctuations, leading to expansion and contraction, but its inherent strength typically means it can handle such stresses. When used in outdoor applications, it’s advisable to select the appropriate type or treatment of metal tube steel to ensure longevity and resistance to the specific weather conditions of the region.
