Mild steel square tube box section is a quality strong metal product. However it is not rust proof and may do so over time. Please use galvanised or stainless steel if you need resistance to rust. If this metal tube does show signs off rust then simply get this off with WD40 or fine sanding.
The grade of plain steel that we have available has mechanical properties that provide excellent machinability, formability and weldability. Mild steel can be welded and it is also suitable for painting. Mild steel is a magnetic grade of metal. Magnets will stick to this sheet but it is not itself a magnet.
We also carry a wide range of mild steel sheet metal, angle iron and flat bar.
Speciality Metals is known to be the United Kingdom’s best up-and-coming small-quantity metal company.
Furthermore we stock a vast range of round tube options that compliment our mesh range perfectly.
Over 50,000 customers of Specialty Metals are provided with fast, friendly customer service every year. We’re the place to try when you need metal of any shape and size. We’re based in Warrington, UK. We pride ourselves on our rapid turnaround and a large range of options.
Regular Inspections: Periodically inspect the tubes for signs of rust, wear or physical damage. Early detection can prevent minor issues from becoming significant problems.
Clean Regularly: Dust, dirt and other contaminants can trap moisture, leading to rust. Use a mild detergent and water to clean the tubes. After washing, thoroughly dry the tubes to prevent water spots and potential rusting.
Check Joints and Connections: If your tube structure is bolted together, periodically check to ensure all connections are tight. Loose connections can stress the tube, leading to deformation or failure.
Avoid Stagnant Water: If your tubes are placed outdoors, ensure they are positioned so that water does not collect and remain in or on them. Stagnant water accelerates rusting.
Treat Scratches and Dents Promptly: Scratches or dents can expose the raw steel beneath the protective coating, making it susceptible to rust. Clean the area and apply a primer followed by a touch-up paint to protect the exposed area.
Climate Considerations: If you live in a coastal or humid area, your steel tubes are more susceptible to rust due to the saline and moist environment. In such cases, more frequent inspections and maintenance might be required.
Limit Chemical Exposure: Avoid exposing the tubes to harsh chemicals, especially those that are acidic or corrosive. If they do come into contact, clean them immediately.
Storage: If the mild box section tubes are not in use, store them in a dry place, preferably indoors and off the ground. Stacking them with spacers in between can prevent moisture trapping.
Seek Professional Advice: If you’re unsure about the condition or how to care for your tubes, consult with a professional or the manufacturer. They can provide specific recommendations based on the steel grade and the environmental conditions of your area.
After welding, it’s vital to clean the weld area and apply a protective coating to prevent rusting.

Marking the Cut:
Tubing Cutters: Specialised tube cutting tools, similar to pipe cutters, are available. These are typically hand tools that you rotate around the tube, gradually tightening to cut through the metal. They offer a cleaner, burr-free cut.
Band Saw: For more industrial applications or workshops, a band saw with a metal cutting blade can provide precise, repeatable cuts, especially for thicker-walled tubes.
Laser and Plasma Cutters: These are advanced, industrial-grade tools that offer high precision and clean cuts. They’re ideal for workshops or manufacturing setups that need to cut large quantities or require high precision.
