#16 mild steel woven mesh with a 1.233mm aperture and 0.355mm wire. With 60% open area and medium weight, it’s perfect for guarding, sieving, and venting applications. Easy to work with and strong enough for repeated use, it’s a cost-effective option for general-purpose mesh needs.
Our #16 woven wire mesh in plain mild steel features a 1.233mm aperture and a 0.355mm wire diameter, creating a strong yet moderately open mesh suitable for a wide range of screening, guarding, and filtering tasks. With a 60% open area, it allows a good level of airflow and visibility while still providing structural stability for industrial and fabrication use. At #16 mesh count, there are 16 holes per linear inch, which offers a fine but visible weave, ideal for medium filtration or protective applications that require a balance between strength and openness.
Weighing approximately 1.01 kg per square metre, this mesh is easy to handle and fabricate, while still retaining the strength needed for workshop or site environments. The plain mild steel construction makes it an economical choice, particularly when used indoors or in environments where it will be coated, painted, or galvanised after installation. The medium gauge wire gives it resilience without excessive rigidity, making it suitable for forming into frames, filters, or panels.
This mesh is commonly used for ventilation grilles, protective covers, sieving trays, and animal enclosures. Its structure makes it strong enough to act as a safety guard for machines or vents, while the finer aperture allows it to screen out medium particles or debris. It can also be used as a lining mesh or support backing for filtration systems, insulation layers, or agricultural screens.
Fabricators, engineers, and DIY users alike appreciate this mesh for its easy workability—it can be cut with snips, bent into custom shapes, or welded into frames without difficulty. It’s particularly useful when a fine woven structure is needed, but the wire must be thick enough to endure regular use or pressure. The mild steel finish offers a neutral, industrial aesthetic, but can be coated to suit specific environments or colour schemes.
Wire mesh materials are also available in brass, copper, galvanised steel and blue PVC.
