What is the Maximum Operating Temperature of Stainless Steel 304 Grade?

The maximum operating temperature for Stainless Steel 304 is typically around 870°C (1,598°F). However, prolonged exposure to temperatures above 425°C (800°F) can lead to a phenomenon known as “sensitisation,” where chromium carbides form along the grain boundaries, reducing the material’s resistance to corrosion. This is especially a concern in applications where the material is subjected to corrosive environments.

For applications that require higher temperature resistance without the risk of sensitisation, other grades of stainless steel, such as 316 or specialised high-temperature alloys, may be more suitable.
